about us

After working as a graphic designer at a major publishing house and an executive assistant at a multinational corporation we launched DASH of WHIMSY in 2016 to fulfill our desire to be creative and unique interior decorators. We have traveled extensively, lived abroad, speak multiple languages, have messy kids and are well aware of all the challenges in creating beautiful spaces and maintaining them. Our main focus is to provide our clients with a one-of-a-kind design by combining their uniqueness with our dash of whimsy and have fun doing what we love the most. We love modern design that reflects functionality and clean lines without appearing sterile. Our strength is our ability to conceptualize looks and bring together diverse color palettes, textures, furniture, and accessories while staying within your budget. We truly enjoy highlighting our clients' tastes and ensuring this is reflected in their homes in the most beautiful and meaningful way possible. But most of all …we love to see you smile.

I fondly recall growing up in Southern Japan with my close-knit family. Strolling through the classic garden in my grandfather’s hotel, embracing the beautiful fabrics of my mother’s kimono collection, going on adventures by the river and in the woods with the neighborhood kids, my childhood was filled with a variety of experiences that left lasting impressions of wonder and enjoyment, and invigorated all my senses.

My inspiration is largely taken from my childhood: a combination of the sense of discovery merged with the elegant Asian aesthetic that infused my environment. Although I relate to many different styles when it comes to interior design, there are always common elements among the clean and elegant aesthetic that I embrace – something fun, something unexpected, something delightful…hence our firm’s name – “Dash of Whimsy”! Home is where you come back to rest, recharge and take pleasure in your surroundings and your life. I look forward to help making that happen for your space.

Prior to becoming an interior decorator, I studied at the California College of the Arts in San Francisco and graduated with a BFA in Graphic Design. While working as a graphic designer at several design offices in and around San Francisco, I received multiple design awards including SAPPI Paper's "Ideas That Matter 2004" as a member of a three-person design team. The proposed campaign for a local non-profit organization called “Friends for Youth” was selected among the top 30 from over 550 submissions worldwide, and our team received the highest grant award of $50,000 to develop and execute the proposed design campaign.

I took a break from my professional career in 2008 when my daughter was born, and had a lot of fun raising my kids for the next eight years. In 2016, Masako and I launched Dash of Whimsy to challenge ourselves to try something new. Though my design challenges have shifted from corporate messaging to creating ideal personal spaces for homeowners, I find that my experience as a graphic designer has equipped me with all the tools needed to excel as an interior decorator. Apart from the unique design constraints of each home, I really enjoy the opportunity of meeting clients, journeying together through the design process and having the privilege of making a positive change in their most cherished living space. It always makes my day when our clients' faces light up with joy.
